Back in the day (like 5 years ago) dirt bikes were expensive. If you wanted to ride the track you could expect to spend $800... or more for a mini dirt bike.

But we live in the age of $20 dvd players and $300 computers.. and dirt bikes aren't far behind. Today you can pick up a mini dirt bike for around $200 and sometimes less. You might expect a $200 dirt bike to be used and beat up, stripped down model.

But that isn't the case today. For that $200 you can expect a brand new 54 pound bike with a 49cc air-cooled two stroke engine. It will have an automatic transmission, pull-cord start and front and rear disc brakes.

So ok, for a Honda or a Yamaha you would have to pay more. But for an intro bike they are worth checking out.

Look for EPA approved models that have oversized front and rear bumpers. Most mini-quads are 49cc 2 stroke models. If you are going to drive your new mini atv off road (and why wouldn't you) look for off road tires. Most transmissions are chain drive with pull start motors. Hey Joss,

The tricks you can do on your mini bike are up to you. Your 50cc bike should have plenty of power for jumps.

The best way to start off with a new trick is to start slowly. Either build or find a mound of dirt about foot high with angled sides. The landing area should be free of hazards. Start by riding your bike over the mound at slow speeds. This will quickly compact the dirt and give you a smooth surface. Increase speed as your confidence increases.. you will soon be catching air!
